ICE Out Protests: Public School Teachers Organized the Student Walkouts | Ashley Hayek
ICE Out protests have been sold as spontaneous student walkouts. Ashley Hayek's daughter came home from a private school with a flyer for one, her team scraped the graphic, and the people who built it turned out to be two Washington DC public school teachers. In Los Angeles, the protest outside White Memorial Hospital was led by a Los Angeles Unified School District teacher. In San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin, the high school walkouts followed the same pattern. And the organizers were not only teachers. They co chair Democratic Socialists of America chapters, and they sit on the board of the American Federation of Teachers. Ashley Hayek is the president of America First Works, the political arm of the America First Policy Institute. She was executive director of Women for Trump and later national coalitions director, was a day one team member of the America First Policy Institute, and founded America First Works with Brooke Rollins in late 2021. She is a mother of five.
