Tea Party Patriots Encourages Congress to Support the ‘Prevent IRS Abuse and Protect Free Speech Act’
ATLANTA, Ga – Tea Party Patriots CEO Jenny Beth Martin released the following statement today in support of the ‘Preventing IRS Abuse and Protect Free Speech Act’ introduced by Congressman Roskam (R-IL).
“The ‘Preventing IRS Abuse and Protect Free Speech Act’ introduced by Congressman Roskam (R-IL) is a good step in the right direction to stop President Obama’s administration from infringing on the rights of American citizens. On behalf of the Tea Party Patriots, which was targeted by IRS agents trying to stop us from exercising our First Amendment rights, I want to thank Congressman Roskam for introducing legislation which helps protect Americans’ privacy and free speech protections. Last fall, Tea Party Patriots successfully helped stop a heavy-handed IRS proposal which would have given the agency authority to collect the Social Security numbers of donors who give to non-profit charitable organizations. We will continue to support all efforts to stop Washington’s power grab. I encourage all members of Congress to support Congressman Roskam’s bill, which will prohibit the Secretary of the Treasury from requiring tax-exempt nonprofit organizations to disclose the identities of their donors in their annual returns, which could potentially allow the IRS to target more Americans for exercising their First Amendment rights.”
